Springtime Happenings at the JK Wine Company

Friday, February 4th, 2011

As Spring approaches, it becomes event season for the JK Wine Company.  The time of year when life in the winery is slow and bud break is just beginning in the vineyard.  Spring is one of my favorite times of the year because it allows me to meet and interact with wine lovers.

First on tap is the 2011 Rhône Rangers Grand Tasting in San Francisco on March 26 and March 27, 2011.  This tasting, held at the historic Fort Mason center, features over 500 wines from more than 100 Rhône Ranger wineries.  Along with your wine, sample gourmet cheeses, breads and olive oils.  As a board member for the Rhône Rangers Organization, I look forward to this event every year.  It’s a great opportunity to showcase our Rhône focused KATIN wines and  I also really enjoy escaping up to San Francisco for the weekend.

Next, JK Wine Company can be found at the Earth Day Food and Wine Festival put on by the Central Coast Vineyard Team at Pomar Junction Winery in Templeton, CA on April 16, 2011.  Just minutes from Paso Robles, we will be attending for our third year.  This event features wines from sustainable farmed vineyards on the Central Coast.  Sample foods and wines from purveyors that strive to nurture a healthy environment.

Two weeks later, JK Wine Company will be found at Hospice du Rhône.  The catchy slogan for this year’s Hospice du Rhone is “So You Think You Can Rhône”.   The 19th annual Hospice du Rhone is April 28-30, 2011.  A whole weekend surrounding all things Rhone!  JK Wine Company will be participating in many of the events, including ‘Rhône and Bowl’, an annual bowling tournament in which I can show off my bowling skills, or lack thereof!  We are also going to have a Winemaker Dinner at Artisan on Friday, April 29 ,2011.  Mark your calendars because the combination of Artisan’s superb local fare and JK Wine Company wines is a duo to not be missed.  Of course we will be pouring our Rhône wines at the Grand Tasting on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

May brings the Paso Robles Wine Festival on May 20-21, 2011.  This event brings more than 90 wineries to the Downtown City Park.  While we won’t be in the park pouring our wine, this is the perfect time to visit our tasting room which is located directly across the street from the Downtown City Park at 810 11th Street located in the Meritage Cooperative Tasting Room.  Come in from the sun and take a break with a plate of artisan cheeses.

This Spring will prove to be a busy, but exciting time for The JK Wine Company and we hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

KATIN- A perfect blend

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

I found attempting to create a name for our flagship Rhone wines a challenge.  I wanted to something unique, but not so diffucult that you couldn’t pronounce.  I wanted something with meaning, but something different than simply my last name.  I recruited my wife Katie to help me with the task.  While sitting at our dining room table, Katie was doodling our names and experimented with combining them.  The ‘KAT’ from Katie and the ‘TIN’ from Justin merged to create KATIN.  The name was decided.
Now, to design the perfect label.  We partnered with Michael Kurtz of Heroist based out of Oregon.  Michael worked tirelessly with us from Day 1 when the KATIN label existed only in our minds to the final product, which included multiple revisions and modifications.  Our label for KATIN features a pattern of dots based on the Fibonacci numbers, a sequence of numbers which reappear repeatedly in nature.   The Fibonnacci sequence is sometimes referred to as the Golden Ratio.  This designs conveys our deep seeded relationship to nature and hands off winemaking style, allowing the natural vineyard expressions to manifest in our wines.   A perfect label for a perfect blend, both figuratively and literally.

Welcome to the World Noah!

On May 18, 2010 at 7:59 am, the JK Wine Company family welcomed another member.  Noah Frank Kahler was born weighing 10 lbs and 2 oz and is just as cute as can be.  Katie and I are proud new parents and big brother Luke seems to be taking well to our new addition.  I’m looking forward to having two little winery helpers in a few years.
